Some’n Unique Magazine, LLC would like to remind you that today, Memorial Day 2016, isn’t about an extra day off from work and a 3-day weekend. It isn’t about barbecues and beer, and it isn’t about ‘Holiday Pay’. Memorial Day is about remembering the young, and we highly stress young (and old), men and women who served in any branch of the U.S. military, and fought and died in wars, many wars the U.S. probably had no true reason for engaging in to begin with.
Its about remembering our fellow soldiers we fought alongside with, fellow soldiers that saved our lives. Its about remembering and honoring the now, thousands of homeless vets. Its about remembering our brothers, sisters, sons and daughters, that lost their lives in combat because they were old enough to go to war, but not old enough to legally buy alcohol. Its about remembering the young mothers and fathers who will never see their infant sons and daughters grow up and experience those ‘first-firsts’ with them. Its about the seasoned vets who finally gave their life in that third or fourth Tour of Duty… That’s what Memorial Day is about. So while you’re throwing back ‘cold ones’ and having a good ol’ time flipping burgers & steaks on the grill, enjoying the sun, the 3-day weekend, and prematurely trying to calculate your holiday pay… you just remember that.
Just so you know, this piece was written by someone who comes from a military family and someone who served in the United States Military. Although there were several close calls, I was fortunate enough to never have to experience the real-life horrors of war, other members of my unit were not.
